High School Course Recommendations
Core Course Admission Requirements
High school students who plan to attend four-year colleges and
universities are encouraged to make rigorous course selections.
Iowa's Regent Universities, as well as other four-year institutions,
suggest that high school students take a minimum of three to four
years of all core subjects. The high school course recommendations
found in the "Building Your Future" article and grid are a good guideline
for admission to any four-year institution. The Regent Universities of Iowa
(The University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and the University of
Northern Iowa) have also started using the Regent Admission Index (RAI).
The RAI is a mathematical formula used to determine student admission
to these three universities. The formula is based upon the number of
core courses a student takes in high school, as well as the student's
grade point average, class rank and ACT composite score.
