LARGE GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL SPEECH
A student may earn a varsity letter for participating in large group and/or individual speech. Points are calculated by the coach(es) according to the scale below and determined by the level to which a student advances. Decisions on points are the coach’s discretion. The student must earn 10 points to letter in speech. If a student does not letter, the points will carry over to the next year. A student will earn points at the highest level achieved (i.e. if a student performs at state but not at All-State he/she would get between three and six points depending on the student’s attendance to rehearsal, effort, behavior and performance.) If a student achieves the state level in two events, he/she MAY earn a letter if the student puts forth adequate effort. A student does not automatically letter if he/she achieves All-State
Large group—points per event
Individual—points per event
Points may also be awarded for work done to contribute to the speech department—helping with calendar, costumes, props, set, awards night, memory book, and other jobs.
Approximately 10 hours of work = 1 point
Students are responsible for keeping track of hours worked and must submit these by the second week of April. Students should label the type of work performed and approximate time spent to the quarter hour—15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes.
Example of points:
Student A participates in Ensemble Acting which get a I at State(5 points), Spontaneous Speaking which gets a II at State (4 points) and helps with awards night (1 point)—total points = 10.
Letters will be awarded at the Speech Awards Banquet.
Attendance for Speech
Attendance at speech rehearsal is very important. When even one person is gone it affects others. As with other activities at LC, a demerit system has been devised.
3 demerits = expulsion from the event
Demerits will be earned as follows:
X One demerit for an unexcused tardiness to any practice
X Two demerits for an unexcused absence from any practice
X Demerits will be given for too many excused rehearsals at the discretion of Mrs. Nielsen
X Any conflict with a rehearsal which was not stated on the conflict sheet will be considered unexcused unless otherwise decided by Mrs. Nielsen. Practices are to be excused only by Mrs. Nielsen. The person seeking the excuse must speak with Mrs. Nielsen immediately.
X Students who have an excused absence from school on the day of rehearsal are excused from rehearsal. Please inform Mrs. Nielsen of your absence from school either by text—402-250-9842 or email email@example.com
