Mike Knell, a 1998 graduate of LCHS, has discovered a new species of raptor dinosaur while working with a research team at the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in southern Utah, one of the last pristine dinosaur graveyards in the United States. Mike, a Montana State University paleontologist and doctoral student, discovered the dinosaur fossil, talos sampsoni, in 2008 and it was unveiled September 19, 2011.
Mike graduated from Lewis Central High School in 1998. He went on earn his B.S. degree in geology at the University of Nebraska in 2002 and then his M.S. degree in paleontology at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 2004. He is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in earth sciences at Montana State University.
