Explore Programs Give Students a Look into the Future

So, what do you want to be when you grow up? This is a question some adults can’t even answer. Explore Programs offered by the Boy Scouts Mid- America Council, are open to everyone. Take a journey into healthcare, journalism, music and more. Spots are limited, and some programs may fill quicker than others.

Are you interested in becoming an airline pilot? What about an airport administrator? Have you ever thought of being an air traffic controller? Or what about working for an aircraft management company? If any of these jobs sound interesting to you, then join Post 518, the University of Nebraska at Omaha Aviation Institute’s Aviation Exploring Post. The aviation and aerospace industries are exciting, dynamic, and ever-changing. In Post 518 you will be given the latest information available on careers in aviation and aerospace through tours, flight simulation, guest speakers, and interactive learning. The group will meet once a week, for 6 meetings. We invite you to join us for our initial meeting on Thursday, August 31, 2017, on the UNO Campus in the Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center, Room 201 at 6:30 PM. This meeting will last approximately 1 hour. Parents and friends are welcome to attend as well. Light refreshments will be served.

During 2017-18, participating Explorers will meet every other Tuesday beginning September 5, 2017 through May 2017, from 6-8:30pm. At each meeting, Explorers will learn and practice fundamental law enforcement procedures to include criminal and traffic law, search and seizure, report writing, criminal and vehicle collision investigations, traffic stops, defensive tactics/handcuffing, less lethal, first aid, and leadership.

Do you enjoy cooking, baking or just eating food? Want to learn how to compost and start seeds? Then the Metro Community College Institute for the Culinary Arts and City Sprouts would like to invite you to their Explorer program! You will get to learn about baking and cooking some of your favorite dishes as well as what it takes to be your own urban gardener. The program will start September 5th and run three weeks at City Sprouts followed by another three weeks at Metro Community College.

The Creighton University Department of Exercise Science and Pre-Health Professions will provide the opportunity for you to explore intersections between exercise science and a variety of healthcare careers. Topics that will most likely be covered include: Physical Therapy Virtual Reality Labs, Biomechanics Lab (the study of human motion), Human Anatomy Labs, Exercise Testing, and Panel Interviews with current Healthcare Practitioners and Undergraduate Students in Pre-Professional tracks. Each night we will cover a different topic and provide thought-provoking information and interactive activities to the career opportunities available. This program meets on Tuesday nights for six weeks.

Interested in architecture and engineering career exploration? Come join the professionals of HDR. Unless noted otherwise, all meetings will be held on Wednesdays from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. in the HDR 2nd Floor Auditorium.

If you are interested in learning about what attorneys do, what it is like to be an attorney, and the judicial process in general, we can help! We will provide you with introductory information about the legal practice and some of the duties and obligations of attorneys. This introduction will help familiarize you with different areas of practice including the civil, criminal, and juvenile court systems. We will also introduce you to the Sarpy County Teen Court program, and teach you skills required to participate in Sarpy County Teen Court. We will hold meetings once a week for six weeks on Thursday evenings.

This program will meet on Mondays for six weeks.

Interested in a career in law enforcement? The OPD program teaches students the skills necessary for a law enforcement career through hands-on experiences and classroom instruction. Participants go through a mini police academy and receive training in areas such as search and seizure, report writing, radio procedures, traffic stops, and crime scene investigations. Please attend one of the kick-off dates on September 13th or 14th.


DOUGLAS COUNTY SHERIFF PROGRAM-This program is almost full!

Join us on the second and fourth Thursday of each month during the school year from 7:00-8:30pm for a traditional law enforcement program combining lecture and hands-on training in criminal and traffic law, search and seizure, report writing, criminal and vehicle collision investigation, defensive tactics/handcuffing, first aid and leadership. During meetings, please park on the Northwest side in the “Visitor” parking lot.

Kaplan University Omaha provides you with the opportunity to explore the Dental Assisting profession. Learn about the dental assistant and skills needed to provide patient care in a clinical dental setting. Learn and interact with different aspects of patient care, including infection control, oral hygiene instruction, assisting with dental procedures and laboratory procedures. Program is limited to 18 students.

The School of Information Technology at Kaplan University invites you to explore the concepts of website development and current trends in cybersecurity. Participants will create an individual online portfolio or biography using HTML and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). The student will be developing skills for today and tomorrow. Interested in dentistry, dental hygiene? We invite you to become a member of this year's Exploring Program in Dentistry. We will meet every Monday for approximately 10 weeks. Our first meeting will be at Creighton's Boyne building, Room 137. Parents are welcome to attend. Only 20 students will be accepted so please register early to reserve your space. Learn about the world of advertising, branding and design. Discover how art, strategy and creative problem solving come together in interesting and exciting communication careers. Interested in a career in Welding? Want to learn the skills necessary for a career where there are more jobs than there a people to fill those positions?  Valmont Industries teaches students the skills needed to earn a starting wage of $16-$18 an hour with full benefits, right here in Columbus, without any college education. Through hands-on experience and classroom instruction participants will receive training in GMAW-C welding, basic weld inspection, the proper procedures to do the work safely, understanding the benefits Valmont offers, how to properly use the tools needed in the welding industry, the soft skills needed for a successful job interview, and build a project with your own hands that you can take home with you. TRAUMA THURSDAY & CHI HEALTH PROGRAM - spots are filling fast!

The Alegent Creighton Health Exploring program will start with the “Trauma Thursday” event at Immanuel Medical Center. This evening is an opportunity to learn more about the health care professionals involved in a trauma situation. After Trauma Thursday, Exploring programs will be offered at out Alegent Creighton Health campuses. Students are encouraged to attend all sessions, but please note that some space may be limited on the more specialized healthcare nights. The program will showcase the area of expertise at Immanuel Medical Center and continuing on with sessions at Lakeside Hospital and Bergan Mercy. All sessions are included in the one-time payment of $35. These programs are an excellent way to learn more about the intricacies of several health care career fields and will provide the student with a better understanding of each specialty. The purpose of this program is to give students the best information about careers in health care through tours, guest speakers, discussions, and various hands-on learning experience.
