Internship Spotlight:

Alexis took the internship class offered at Lewis Central both second and third term.  Alexis’ internship was with the Midlands Humane Society. She took this internship because of her interest in animals.  Alexis has learned that animals at a home act completely different than animals in a shelter. In a kennel, animals can be agitated, but when properly cared for and played with, they can become very happy and loving.

Alexis indicates that she has learned how to do leash work with dogs that need behavioral help.  She teaches them basic obedience and commands in order to make them more adoptable. Alexis helps with adoption counseling so that animals find the right fit.  She also helps with adoption paperwork and answers general questions from the public. Finally, she ensures that the database of adoptable animals is updated and performs general cleaning duties.  One of things that Alexis will always remember from this internship is that owning an animal is a privilege, not a right.

Alexis now has a better understanding of dogs and how they act.  She has determined that she wants to work with animals for her career, and is especially interested in evaluating animals for adoptions. Alexis wants to be able to help others learn how to have a successful experience with owning animals by training the animals and their owners. Alexis ended up adopting her dog, Raven, from the Humane Society while she was an intern and it is proving to be a great experience for the two of them.

Finally, Alexis feels that having an internship experience is helpful.  She thinks such an experience is much better than just jumping into a career path blindly.  Instead, an internship gives you a better understanding of what you’re getting into so that your future career is something you want to do every day. click to view
