Give Yourself the Gift of Grace, Not Guilt

What things come to mind when you think of the holidays? Santa, Christmas lights & beautifully decorated Christmas trees, family gatherings, work parties, Hanukkah, shopping & crowded department stores, and. . . Christmas cookies and pie and roast and eggnog and mashed potatoes and gingerbread men and ham and that homemade fudge your co-worker brought to the office that you couldn’t say no to. . . 

This time of year we tend to feel like we are literally surrounded by food, which can make it difficult to listen to and to eat according to our bodies’ signals, leading what often seems inevitable -- eating way more than our bodies need. Combined with the stress of holiday shopping, travel or out-of-town guests, holiday parties galore, the pressure of a picture-perfect Christmas, these food-related stressors can send our body image plummeting to an all-time low. And at the same time, we are inundated with calorie-saving tips, ways to minimize damage to our waistlines, and constant diet-chatter from family and friends.

What if the focus of holidays was not on food and on worrying about our waistlines but on what is really important? This holiday season, be a "rebel." Give yourself the gift of living in the moment, the gift of enjoying foods rather than fearing them, and the gift of grace, not guilt.
