LC Students win essay competition

LC Students Win Essay CompetitionPosted on 01/12/2012

On the morning of January 6th, several Lewis Central students arrived at school dressed to the nines and ready to impress at the Iowa State Bar Association’s annual Know Your Constitution Luncheon. After carefully researching the United States Constitution, several social sciences classes carefully crafted essays questioning the constitutionality of a scenario presented to them by the Bar Association. After careful consideration, the Iowa State Bar Association Know Your Constitution Committee selected six students’ essays to represent both their legislative districts and Lewis Central.
Seniors Allison James and Ryan Simmons as well as juniors Molly Berringer, Derek Jenkins, Ellen Overholtzer and Tyler Raygor attended the event, accompanied by last year’s finalist senior Gabriela Alvarez and LCHS teacher John Drake. The afternoon consisted of a delicious lunch and speeches by Samuel Langholz and Justice Edward Mansfield of the Iowa Supreme Court. Overall, the luncheon was not only educational but entertaining and an experience worth having.
