The following information is to help parents and students plan for graduation activities. There are several important dates that need attention.  Please make sure to read the information below, and if there are any questions, you can contact the Principal’s office.

  1. Date - Commencement will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 27th, 2018.

  1. Location - Commencement will be held at the Mid America Center.

  1. Seating - Parents will be allowed to enter the North doors and  will sit in back of the graduates on the main floor. Parents and graduates should arrive no later than 12:45 p.m. All other guests will enter the South doors and will be allowed to sit in the stands. Guests with mobility limitations are welcome to utilize the elevator or escalator to the general seating areas on the second floor. Wheelchair accessible seating is available in the general seating areas on a first come, first served basis.

  1. Deaf Interpreters- Arrangements can be made to have the program signed for the deaf.  If you need service, please call Donna Elliff at 712-366-8322.

  1. Dress – All students must be properly attired in order to participate in the commencement exercise.  Blue Jeans and/or tennis shoes are not acceptable.  Proper attire is as follows:

Girls – Preferred dress or skirt and blouse should be worn under the gown with dress shoes.

Boys – Boys should wear a dress shirt and a long tie  (no bow ties) and dark slacks and dress shoes.

  1. Senior Meeting – All Seniors must meet Wednesday, May 23rd, at 7:00 a.m. in the large school  gym. Seniors will receive information regarding Thursday’s checkout procedure and other information on commencement.

  1. Caps and Gowns – Caps and gowns will be distributed at the end of rehearsal on May 25th. You will not be given your cap and gown until you have completed the “check-out” procedure. Caps should be worn flat on the top of the head with the point of the cap centered in the middle of the forehead. Tassels are placed on the right.

  1. Rehearsal - Commencement rehearsal will be held in the gymnasium from 8:00-10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 25th,  for students only.  All graduates who plan on participating in the commencement exercise must attend rehearsal unless excused by the Principal prior to rehearsal. Immediately following practice, seniors can join their classmates in a free lunch and social hour.  They can organize activiites if they wish.

  1. Student Obligations – Students must take care of all obligations and complete the formal check- out process before they will receive their cap and gown and be eligible to participate in commencement exercises.  Student obligations include completing all required credits; paying for all fees and fines; returning all textbooks, library books, and equipment; and serving all detentions. The Senior Checkout Form is due in the Principal’s office no later than the end of the day on Thursday, May 24th.  This is the last day for seniors.

  1. Commencement Participation – Only those students who meet all of the requirements for graduation by 9:00 a.m. Friday will be included in the program. Any student who meets the requirements by the end of school on Friday, May 26th, will still be allowed to walk, but will not be in the program due to the printing deadline for the program.  Students who do not meet the graduation requirements will be notified by May 25th and must attend school until the last school day for  Lewis Central students.

  1. Day of Ceremony - Seniors and parents must arrive at the Mid America Center by 12:30 p.m. and check in. We recommend you have a family member or friend hold your personal items, as there will be no space to store your belongings during the ceremony. Parents  will walk their senior halfway and will be seated in back of the graduates.  Ushers will guide parents where to sit. Only parents, step-parents or guardians will be allowed to walk.  No siblings , grandparents, or other relatives will be allowed to walk with the student.

  1. Diploma Distribution – As in previous years, graduates will receive their diploma after the ceremony.  Seniors will be presented an empty diploma holder as their names are read. This procedure will eliminate confusion if someone gets out of order or if there is a last minute no-show.  Furthermore, this will ensure that the ceremony proceeds without delay. Graduates will receive their personalized diploma insert immediately following the ceremony in the Commons area.  Those graduates who are not participating in the graduation ceremony can pick up their diplomas from Renee Kybat in the counseling office after May 28th.

  1. Senior Awards Night - Awards Night is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 21st, at the Middle School auditorium.  All seniors and parents are encouraged to attend this program.  Every senior in attendance will be recognized near the end of the program.

  1. Pictures/Video- DVD copies of the ceremony and senior video will be available at a cost of $20 .Additional order forms will be available in the Principal’s office the week prior to graduation.  Your copy will be available after June 5th and can be picked up in the office. As in previous years, Pyles Studio will be at Commencement to take pictures as your senior receives his or her diploma.  These pictures are provided at no charge to you and will be mailed home during the month of June.
